The Loudoun Archaeological Foundation, Inc., as a non-profit, 501 (c) (3), must rely on a combination of grants, donations of money and in-kind goods and services to fund its programs of archaeological research (i. e. investigation, analysis, and reporting) and “whole community” archaeological public education and preservation/conservation. The minimum annual budget required to conduct even a minimal program effort is $100,000. As a start-up organization -- directed by a non-paid, volunteer professional archaeologist and supported by a non-paid, volunteer professional administrator -- first-year costs for various organizational services (i. e. filing for a state charter, IRS non-profit status, developing administrative forms and documents, purchasing general liability insurance, etc.), acquiring office and laboratory space, equipment, and supplies, and purchasing archaeological field equipment and supplies will necessarily require a substantial portion of our budget. Fortunately, most of the various organizational administrative costs cited above, with the exception of insurance, have been met through the donations (so far) of approximately $10,000 of in-kind goods and services. We also have received commitments in excess of $15,000 for office and laboratory equipment as well as cash donations of approximately $5,000. In addition, the Virginia General Assembly, in recognition of the uniqueness and importance of our organizational form and goals, has awarded the Loudoun Archaeological Foundation, Inc. a one-year grant of $37,500, subject to the receipt of matching funds from other sources. Through our web site, a new pamphlet describing our goals, programs, etc., and a county-wide public information effort, we aspire to reach our fund-raising goal of at least $50,000 through an effective one-on-one approach to the business and civic communities in Loudoun County, Virginia. There are many ways that you can support the Loudoun Archaeological Foundation. Financial support for the foundation is its most urgent need as it begins both its archaeological public education program and its programs for the preservation and conservation of the cultural and natural resources of Loudoun County and adjacent regions. Information on the Foundation’s fund-raising opportunities can be found below. You also may donate needed goods and services to the Foundation. The Foundation accepts donations that could be used for auction to support the Foundation’s programs. If you wish to make a donation for auction by the Foundation or to discuss other appropriate donations of goods and services, contact the Foundation by email at: donations@loudounarchaeology.org. To review items the Foundation has available for auction and to offer a bid, please go to the web page section on The Loudoun Archaeological Foundation’s Great Little Auction. Because the Loudoun Archaeological Foundation is geared towards a “whole community” approach to archaeological public education and preservation/conservation of the cultural and natural resources of Loudoun County and environs, it will primarily rely upon volunteers, under the direct supervision of professional archaeologists, to carryout its various programs. To see the types of programs the Foundation will be conducting go the web page sections on Loudoun Archaeological Foundation’s Program of Work Activities, and Loudoun Archaeological Foundation Press Center. Persons interested in participating on archaeological digs conducted from the Foundation should register for appropriate training at a Foundation-sponsored program. Opportunities for training and participation on archaeological digs will be announced on one or more of the web pages noted in this paragraph.
